Résumé:
Vocabulary learning is one of the most critical, but challenging tasks for EFL learners. One
way to ease the burden is to aid students to become independent EFL vocabulary learners.
This could be achieved through providing them with vocabulary learning strategies.
Instructing students to apply context clues can be one of the strategies that guide them to find out the meanings of unfamiliar words. In Jijel, both middle school pupils and teachers face difficulties in vocabulary acquisition due to limited exposure to English and overreliance on rote learning. This study addresses the problem by exploring the use of contextual clues as a vocabulary learning strategy from both students and teachers perspectives. To conduct this research, a mixed-methods approach was adapted. Quantitative data were collected through questionnaires, while qualitative insights were gathered through semi-structured interviews.
The study involved 50 middle school pupils and 10 EFL teachers from Jijel .The findings
revealed that utilizing context clues' strategy has a positive effect on vocabulary acquisition.
This strategy can make learners understand the meanings of new words, and thus many EFL teachers need to implement this strategy in their classrooms.
