Résumé:
This study aimed to find out the teachers’ attitudes towards teaching English proverbs as a strategy
to raise students’ cultural awareness. It aimed also to investigate whether proverbs are used as a part
of English foreign language teaching at the Departement of English, University of Jijel. The
present research work revolved around the basic hypothesis that if English as a Foreign Language
teachers hold positive attitudes towards teaching English proverbs they would use them as a
strategy to raise students’ cultural awareness. To this end, a questionnaire was administered to
teachers at the Department of English in an attempt to reveal their attitudes towards teaching
English Proverbs as a strategy to raise cultural. After analysing the teachers’ answers, the results
reveal that the vast majority of teachers hold positive attitudes towards teaching English proverbs.
In addition, the respondents reported that teaching proverbs might serve as useful strategy to raise
students’ cultural awareness.
