dc.description.abstract This study aims at investigating the motivational strategies used in English foreign language (EFL) classes to develop the students’ speaking skill at the department of English / University of Mohammed Seddik Ben Yahia Jijel. In this research, it has hypothesized that if teachers use motivational strategies in class, students’ speaking skill can be developed. To reach the aim of this study, two questionnaires and a classroom observation were used. The students’ questionnaire was administered to (75) first year students out of (225). It aimed at identifying the students’ opinions about oral expression class, and the problems they face when speaking. Also, it aimed at identifying students’ perceptions toward the motivational strategies used to develop their speaking skill. The teachers’ questionnaire on the other hand was administered to (7) teachers of oral expression. It aimed at identifying the teachers’ perceptions about the students’ level in the speaking skill, their opinions and the problems they face when teaching speaking. Also, it aimed at identifying the teachers’ perceptions toward motivational strategies they use when teaching speaking. Moreover, a classroom observation was directed to four groups out of seven. It aims at getting a general insight about what was happening in the oral sessions in terms of the use of motivational strategies. The findings indicated that teachers use some motivational strategies in class. These strategies are a good way to increase students’ motivation, and then contribute to the development of the students’ speaking skill. Based on the results obtained, some pedagogical recommendations are made in order to develop the students’ speaking skill. fr_FR
